A Word From... Dr. C.A. Heller III DVM
Indoor/Outside Cats
Indoor / Outdoor cats are exposed to more danger than their indoor counterparts. Things like trauma, parasites and infectious illnesses are seen much more commonly in cats that go outside.
There are two infectious illnesses are commonly seen. They are feline leukemia and feline immunode-ficiency virus (feline aids). Both of these illnesses are commonly contracted from cats fighting with each other. Both are ultimately fatal.
They can be prevented via testing and vaccination. All new cats entering a home should be tested to see if they are currently infected with either of these viruses. If the tests are negative, there are vac-cines that can give immunity against these illnesses. By giving these vaccines your indoor/outdoor cat can still enjoy their outdoor adventures more safely.
