A Word From... Dr. C.A. Heller III DVM

Winter Time Injuries

One thing all pet owners dread is having their pets hit by a car. The types of injuries that often result are devastating. It is not uncommon to see broken bones, internal organ injury and even death.

As a pet health care provider, I have noticed certain times of the year in which we see more of these injuries. The recent change to cold wet and snowy precipitation is one of these times. The reason for this is that we humans do not like to go out in the cold. It is very easy to fall into the habit of letting our pets out by themselves. Try and always avoid doing this. All pets are by nature curious and when left out alone they will tend to investigate their surroundings. This results in them leaving their yard and possibly getting injured.

Please remember to always take your pets out on a leash. This will go along way to preventing any unexpected trauma.

Have a good winter season!

Sincerely,
