Springtime
Spring is fast approaching. Soon all the snow will be gone and the grass will be turning green. With this warm up, skunks will soon be leaving their winter homes and be more active in our backyards. This increased activity means that our pets will have more of a chance to come in contact with them.
If you have ever had a pet sprayed by a skunk, then you know how unpleasant the odor can be. Most of these encounters occur in the early morning or in the early evening. This is because skunks, like most wild animals, tend to be most active at night. You can decrease your pets risk for getting sprayed by being sure to walk them on a leash during these times of the day.
If you do have the unfortunate luck of having your pet sprayed, the following skunk spray removal recipe will come in handy.
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 2 tsp of dish soap (some believe that Dawn works best)
- 1 qt of 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore
Mix all of the above ingredients together. Then wash your pet and rinse well. Be careful not to get any of the mixture in your pets eyes. Also the recipe may cause some discoloration of your pets fur due to the peroxide.
Since skunks are well known for being able to become infected with rabies, this is a good time to make sure that your pet has a current rabies vaccine.
I hope that you never have to use this recipe, but it is always good to have the ingredients on hand just in case.
Sincerely,
